Bungie heard the feedback on your favorite activities, so Destiny 2 will be "building on the Coils and the Onslaughts" going forward

Destiny 2 got true loot rain in the beloved Coil activity, and back in January Bungie said it was prepared to make it rain again. Speaking with Edge magazine in a new feature on the making of The Final Shape and the future of Destiny 2, Bungie stresses how positive feedback to activities like the Coil and Onslaught has informed its plans.

"Part of year 10 is making sure we give a lot of focus to these individual Acts so you know exactly where to go, exactly what to do when you're chasing this loot," says assistant game director Robbie Stevens. "We have a lot of ways that we're considering doing this. We have a lot of ways we've done it in the past, and we're going to be blending those over the next year or so, but honestly a lot of it is just coming down to a lot of stuff coming in year 10 first. A lot of it is building on the Coils and the Onslaughts."

After its introduction in the Into the Light update, Onslaught has been preserved through the Vanguard playlist. Stevens said Destiny 2 will "build upon" Onslaught going forward, and while the Coil has rotated out of the game with other seasonal content, its ideas and successes, especially that roguelike feel and variation, will live on as well.

"Some of the thinking with some of the roguelikes and some of the bins that you could think of for survival or extraction games or things like that is: what are those different styles of stakes that you can apply to these different activity types?" Stevens says. "How can we build an activity type that actually can be longer than the traditional Strike or Battleground? How can we change the things we're building to react to players saying, 'We want to see y'all really mix the pot on what Destiny could be'?"

Destiny 2 is getting a new Exotic mission in a few months, and Bungie says "it is one of the biggest we've ever built."

PSA: Eating pizza as a certain race in Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail can lead to horrible (and hilarious) spaghettification

Public warning: don't eat pizza in Final Fantasy 14... unless you want a mini black hole to open up around your character's nose, causing horrid but hilarious disfigurement.

Final Fantasy 14 introduced a beautiful graphical overhaul alongside its new summery expansion Dawntrail, but the update seems to have broken a couple of pre-existing animations, which I'm not complaining about because the results are expectedly brilliant.

Final Fantasy 14 players have flocked onto the interwebs to warn others that male Au Ra, the horned lads you might see running around, are deadly allergic to pizza. (Some kind of genetic resistance to Italian food?) The clips below show a bunch of instances of Au Ra chomping down on cheesy slices, before their entire faces flip and jumble and rejig and and generally become squished - before going back to normal, so what's the harm really. Enjoy a slice while you have a laugh below; as far as we're aware, the bug doesn't exist in real life.

Old animations working perfectly with the graphical update from r/ffxiv

Ending the animation with a thumbs up is truly the cherry on top of an already funny bug that hopefully won't be fixed any time soon. "Pizza so good you'll undergo spaghettification to get it," one Reddit comment jokes.

When players weren't busy being terrorized by pizza, Final Fantasy 14 fans gathered to wave goodbye to the expansion that ended a ten-year saga, Endwalker, with huge group photos and "Goodbye Endwalker" chants in unison. If you're looking to get into the MMO for the first time, then skip Final Fantasy 14's "endless labyrinth" of account sign-up checklists with one handy fan-built tool.

Final Fantasy 14’s Yoshi-P “would love” to see the MMO on Nintendo’s Switch successor.

Silent Hill creator says he wouldn't be "unsatisfied" if Slitterhead was his last game because his "last mission" is to "leave a path for these younger creators"

Keiichiro Toyama - the director and writer behind the original Silent Hill, Siren, and both Gravity Rushes - is now working on another new concept in the form of Slitterhead, a disturbing, body-hopping action-horror game. With such an influential resume behind him, the famed dev wouldn't be "unsatisfied" if it were to be his last directorial role.

During an interview with Gamesradar+ at Summer Game Fest 2024, Toyama was asked about his opinion on comments made by Astlibra Revision creator Keizo about how many games one could make within a single lifetime. "From a personal perspective, I'm going into my mid-50s," Toyama explained via an interpreter, "I don't feel like I'd be unsatisfied even if this was the last game I made."

Despite the sentiment, Toyama emphasizes that he doesn't have any concrete plans to stop making games, though his more pressing concern is about what he can leave for the next generation of developers under his wing. "I opened up this studio and we actually have a lot of new staff coming in, younger staff. I'm more concerned about what I can leave behind for them," he continued. "Obviously I'm not saying this is my last game. But I think my last mission is to leave a path for these younger creators to work on what they want to."

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto recently expressed a similar attitude, explaining that the company was in the midst of a "generational handover" with "developers that are young and brilliant." Resident Evil's once-director and fellow horror icon Shinji Mikami also stayed at his former studio Tango Gamesworks for eight years longer than he planned because he wanted to give younger developers a place to grow.

From Snatcher to Slitterhead, check out the collected works of Keiichiro Toyama.

The new Riven remake is even better than Myst

Enlarge / The same gorgeous vistas return in the Riven remake. (credit: Samuel Axon)

A remake of Riven: The Sequel to Myst launched this week, made by the original game's developers. It strikes a fascinating balance between re-creation and reinvention, and based on a couple of hours of playing it, it's a resounding success.

Myst was the classic most people remembered fondly from the early CD-ROM era, but for me, its sequel, Riven, was the highlight. After that, the sequels declined in quality. The sophomore effort was the apex.

It was certainly more ambitious than Myst. Instead of a handful of tightly packed theme park worlds, it offered a singular, cohesive one that felt lived in and steeped in history in a way that Myst couldn't quite match.

After 25 years, one of the OG anime visual novels has finally hit Steam with its first official English translation

A quarter-century after its original release, Kanon - one of the most celebrated visual novels ever made - has finally hit Steam with its first official English translation.

Kanon puts you in the shoes of a high school boy who has recently returned to a town he had visited seven years earlier. He meets five girls who each tie into one of the game's major plotlines, with your choices determining which story you follow through to its conclusion. It's a cute slice-of-life romance that to this day remains one of the darlings of the dating sim scene.

Originally released in 1999, Kanon was the first game from Key, the visual novel studio that would go on to make the even more beloved Clannad. Like many romance visual novels of its era, Kanon originally launched with a bit of explicit sexual content attached, but later releases of the game - including this one - excised that content in favor of an all-ages story. It was a big enough hit in Japan to inspire light novels, manga, and two separate anime adaptations.

On top of the new, official English translation, the new Steam edition adds voice acting to the PC version for the first time, and upgrades the UI and visuals to look nice in HD. The game defaults to widescreen, which means some of the original 4:3 art gets cropped, but Steam reviews suggest you can still see the full, original art at the press of a button.

Kanon is a pretty niche game in 2024, but that's exactly why it was so exciting to see it among Steam's new releases this month. It's a game with a notable legacy in a notable genre, and it's great to see it get the chance to meet a whole new audience.

Looking for some of the best anime games? You know where to click.

Switch 2 Needs Backwards Compatibility, And Luigi's Mansion 2 Shows Why

Nintendo has gained a reputation, and not unfairly, for double- or even triple-dipping on its beloved catalog of classic games. From Super Mario All-Stars on Super NES, to the Classic NES Collection on Game Boy Advance, to modern HD remasters like Metroid Prime and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Nintendo has never been shy about capitalizing on its history. As we move into an increasingly digital era, Nintendo has also been noticeably slow to adopt a single, cross-generation digital library akin to PlayStation and Xbox. We've seen lots of speculation over whether Nintendo will finally break this trend as it moves into the era of the Switch successor--and recent remasters like Luigi's Mansion 2 HD show why it's so necessary that the company follows through with this pro-consumer move.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is a remaster of a 2013 3DS game, and a pretty good one at that. I enjoyed revisiting the 3DS game on a modern system and felt it was paying homage to its history. But it's precisely because this appealed to me as a historical artifact that I couldn't help but think about what it means for my digital collection. Luigi's Mansion 2 is, so far, the middle chapter of a series that has already grown past it. It's nice to have the game unshackled from the 3DS, but that won't matter if its destiny is just to get shackled to the Nintendo Switch instead.

To be blunt, Luigi's Mansion 2 is good but slight. It's an enjoyable little chapter and a neat way to see how the Luigi's Mansion series has developed, but it's lower on the tier list of vital remasters than games that are older, more in need of modernization, or just difficult to find. The mere existence of an HD remaster of Luigi's Mansion 2 shows how Nintendo is filling its release calendar, which is a fine strategy as the Switch lives an especially long time for a console. And it's far from the last. At its June 2024 Nintendo Direct, the company announced a remaster of Donkey Kong Country Returns, a game that was already ported to the 3DS shortly after its initial release on the Wii and is now making the journey to Switch.Continue Reading at GameSpot

After just two weeks, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance enters Steam's highest-rated JRPG chart

Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance, the juicy mega-re-release for (obviously) Shin Megami Tensei 5, has already wormed its way into Steam's best-rated Japanese role-playing games chart a mere two weeks after its launch.

For those not in the ShinPersonaHackers camp, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance practically bolts on an entire second campaign called the Canon of Vengeance, in addition to the base game's Canon of Creation storyline, as well as new demons to fight/recruit, new dungeons, new characters, and several other major tweaks to progression and the turn-based combat.

With so much new newness added to the landmark game, it's no surprise to hear that it's now one of best-rated JRPGs on Steam. Sitting at an 'Overwhelming Positive' score based on almost 2,500 user reviews, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance is now the storefront's twelfth high-rated game in the subgenre's charts, beating both classics (Final Fantasy 9) and newbie heavyweights (Yakuza: Like A Dragon) alike.

The only JRPGs with better ratings are this year's Granblue Fantasy Relink, classic remake Star Ocean The Second Story R, Astlibra Revision, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, Final Fantasy 14 and the OG Final Fantasy 7, HD-2D pioneer Octopath Traveler 2, Nier Automata, and a trio of bangers at the top of the list: Persona 3 Reload, Persona 5 Royal, and Persona 4 Golden - which are all, funnily enough, Shin Megami Tensei spin-offs.

The mammoth re-release isn't just a critical hit, though. Vengeance sold a whopping 500,000 copies in three days alone, which means it's actually inching closer to the big sales numbers that its more popular spin-off series Persona normally manages. Total Shin Megami Tensei 5 sales numbers sit at a comfortable 1.6 million.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 director echoes FromSoftware’s stance on hard games: “Our intent was never to make things difficult for difficulty’s sake.”

10 years later, The Sims 4 is finally getting its long-requested polyamory feature in a free update alongside the new Lovestruck expansion

Alongside The Sims 4's steamy new expansion pack Lovestruck, EA reveals that it's releasing a free update containing one of the community's most requested romance features - polyamory.

Next month brings truly exciting times for us Simmers - not only is EA's spiciest expansion pack yet dropping, but the life sim's developer is also finally adding polyamory to the game. This marks a monumental first for The Sims series, with no entry prior to the fourth officially supporting open or polyamorous relationships. Longtime fans may recall grappling with Sims and their negative emotions when they feel they're being cheated on. Gone are those days of needing Sims 4 mods just to counter unwanted jealousy, though, according to EA.

"Free for all players is the new Romantic Boundaries system that will allow you to customize your Sim's experience with boundaries and jealousy," writes the dev in a post announcing the Lovestruck expansion. "You can now define how your Sims approach romantic relationships in terms of physical and emotional romantic exclusivity. This allows for Sims to date multiple Sims without impact to other relationships." Unsurprisingly, Simmers largely seem ecstatic to hear EA's news regarding polyamory.
Polyamory coming into the base game for everyone. from r/Sims4

In a recent Reddit thread, fans are sharing their thoughts on the update: "FINALLY! I am tired of giving all my poly sims the player trait as a workaround!" Another player comments that it's "One less mod I need to use," while many more express how they're "so excited to read this." As someone with thousands of in-game hours myself, I'm looking forward to scrapping some mods in favor of official polyamory support - more importantly, though, I'm happy to hear that console users without any access to mods can play more freely.

Everyone can experience the joys of open relationships and polyamory with their Sims now, whether on PC or on console, once the free update rolls out this summer. The patch should make its way to The Sims 4 at the same time as the Lovestruck expansion launching on July 25, so there's not long to wait anymore - a welcome fact after 24 lengthy years without any word of such inclusive relationship dynamics in The Sims series.

Looking for something new to play? Here are 10 games like The Sims 4 to check out.

Metal Gear Solid Delta's visual filters let you replicate the original MGS 3's PS2 look

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remakes the 2004 stealthy-action game with all the modern bells and whistles (and realistically rendered pores) you'd expect, but a few filters will still let you replicate the original Metal Gear Solid 3's look. In other words, the pee-yellow filter is making a comeback.

"After the new trailer, some commenters said they would like to play with the colors from the original," producer Noriaki Okamura explained in the most recent Metal Gear - Production Hotline episode on YouTube. "We do have multiple color filters you can change between, applicable whether you are playing with New Style or Legacy Style," he continued, referring to the updated control settings and the old ones from the PS2 release that are both in the remake.

The two screenshots below compare the same shot in two different filters: the "Normal" color palate that the remake's introducing, and the "Legacy" filter that tries to echo the original game's yellowy-green hues. Scroll a little further and the embedded video will give you a look at two more filters - a "Sepia" one that looks like it's been drenched in teabags and a "Retro" one that's much more purple - starting at around the 7-minute mark.

Metal Gear Solid Delta's changes to the original game's art style were slightly controversial with fans, so it's nice to see a little throwback option that might alleviate some complaints. Other HD-era remakes, like Shadow of the Colossus and Halo 2 Anniversary for example, have also come under fire for ignoring the original's artistic intent in favor of a cleaned up, smoothed out 'realistic' look, so hopefully the trend above continues in future remakes/reimaginings/remasters.

Metal Gear Solid Delta is set to release sometime later this year on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

A Metal Gear Solid 3 remake producer also said Konami would “like nothing better” than for OG director Hideo Kojima to come back and work on the series.

Hearthstone Perils in Paradise Card Reveal: Rogue Eudora Leads A Treasure Hunt

Hearthstone's next expansion, Perils in Paradise, is launching on July 23. And while the tropical-themed expansion is mostly about kicking back and relaxing on the beach, everybody knows that when you go on vacation, you should keep a close eye on your wallet. Sure enough, the Rogue package for the upcoming expansion has big burgle synergy, with cards that reward you for exercising the old five-finger discount.

The leader of the gang is Treasure Hunter Eudora, a Rogue legendary card (with a lovely Signature variant). The 6-mana 4/5 Pirate has a Battlecry that gives you a Sidequest token, Eudora's Treasure Hunt. The Sidequest challenges you to play three cards from other classes.Gallery

To help you complete the task, Eudora has brought a couple of scurvy scalawags along with her, and a big spell that will help remove threats while you plan your heist. Sea Shill is a 3-mana 3/2 pirate that gives you a 2-mana discount on the next non-Rogue card you play. Conniving Conman is a 4-mana 4/4 pirate that lets you double up on your stolen goods by replaying the last card you played from another class. And Snatch and Grab is an 8-mana spell that removes two enemy minions--but gets cheaper and more efficient for every stolen card you've played.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Let Me Solo Her is now Let Me Solo Him in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and he's ready to kill Messmer for you

Elden Ring community legend Klein Tsuboi – best known as Let Me Solo Her – is back, this time with an updated name and mission as he sets out on a new quest to help struggling Tarnished everywhere beat Shadow of the Erdtree's extra spicy mandatory boss, Messmer the Impaler.

Let Me Solo Her rose to fame back in 2022, when he first began offering his services to players struggling to beat the hardest boss from Elden Ring's base game, Malenia. Wearing nothing but a jar on his head, the noble Tarnished did exactly what his name suggested, and would take on Malenia alone while the player he was helping stood safely off to one side, and over time, he defeated her thousands of times. Now, though, in an announcement on Twitter and YouTube, it seems a new era is upon us, as the player has transformed into Let Me Solo Him.

The iconic jar helmet is still intact, but this time, the player is rocking a new cloak, and it's Messmer who's at the other end of his sword. In a video on YouTube, Let Me Solo Him has shown off one of these solo fights already, demonstrating an absolutely flawless run where he defeats Messmer in less than four minutes without getting hit once. "It's time," he writes in the video description.

Anyone who's fought Messmer will know that that's no mean feat – he's a fast, aggressive boss who leaves few opportunities for you to swing at him without being swiftly met with a spear or scorching flames in your face. While he offers a fair fight, there's no denying that he's brutal to learn, and he's an enemy you absolutely have to defeat if you want to progress Shadow of the Erdtree's story. With that in mind, you can imagine players feeling totally stuck on him would love nothing more than to see Let Me Solo Him's summon sign appear outside the boss door.

Whether Let Me Solo Him will be taking on Messmer with the same gusto as he did Malenia remains to be seen, but if someone with a jar on their head appears to help you in the fight, just be aware that you may well be in the presence of a legend.

If you want to get equipped for the fight against Messmer, be sure to check out our guide to the best weapons in Shadow of the Erdtree for all builds.

Persona and Shin Megami Tensei lead reveals you won't be able to see every dungeon in Metaphor: ReFantazio in just one playthrough as the new JRPG offers "a lot more freedom"

Mastermind Persona and Shin Megami Tensei director Katsura Hashino explains just how big Atlus' upcoming JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio is - and why you'll probably have to play a few times to experience every dungeon.

There are only a few months left between now and Metaphor: ReFantazio's grand release this fall, and Atlus' new JRPG sounds downright massive. Speaking recently to GameSpot, director Katsura Hashino reveals just how big the game is, and how it stands apart from the studio's predecessors such as Persona. Much like Persona, there are plenty of dungeons to explore - but in contrast, they're not all that linear. According to Hashino, players have more freedom in Metaphor: ReFantazio to choose how and where to progress.

"Imagine if you go on vacation," the developer explains, comparing the choices one faces in reality to those one may find in-game. "You go to a city and you have 10 places listed on your travel log. Some of these might take two days to enjoy, whereas others might take half a day. Some might require a guide or more preparations, others might be a bit more safe. But you can't do it all." Just as a person "can't do it all" while making decisions in real life, they also can't accomplish everything available to play through in Metaphor: ReFantazio all at once.

"In this game, you travel a lot," Hashino continues, "and when you get to your destinations, you have a choice of multiple dungeons you can do. And all these dungeons have different difficulty levels as well, so it's kind of up to you how you choose to spend your time. In this way, there's a lot more freedom." The main story itself is fixed in Metaphor: ReFantazio, but it seems like there's still a lot of choice within it - it certainly sounds different than the TV World in Persona 4 or the Palaces in Persona 5, and I personally can't wait to play.

"It's definitely harder than Persona": Shin Megami Tensei lead explains that his new JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio needed more challenge or else "it won't feel right"

Manor Lords is still "moving forward," even as the city builder's creator takes a well-deserved minibreak amid its Unreal Engine 5 move

Manor Lords is still chugging towards its early access finish line, but the game's sort-of-solo developer is taking a much-deserved break while making the transition to Unreal Engine 5.

Manor Lords was and still is one of the year's biggest surprises. The medieval strategy game had a record-breaking early access launch when it outperformed other genre juggernauts and has since sold over two million copies. But after pushing out a hefty major update that both added new stuff and fixed old stuff, Manor Lords creator Greg Styczeń admitted he felt "really stressed."

Thankfully, that whirlwind launch seems to have cooled down a little. Styczeń recently tweeted a serene screenshot from the game's landscape alongside a short update on the game's progress. "Sorry for the delay in news lately, [I'm] still working on the UE5 port here and also resting a bit with the family, but things are definitely moving forward," he wrote.

Very pretty shot of a small village from Ben from the Facebook group.(Sorry for the delay in news lately, still working on the UE5 port here and also resting a bit with the family, but things are definitely moving forward) pic.twitter.com/liGjf3ZTNbJune 25, 2024

The move to a fancier engine should sort out some "annoying" issues left in the game, while giving the developers the "ability to simultaneously work on console ports without hitting blocks from obsolete console SDKs." Elsewhere in the comments of the post above, Styczeń explained that the engine transition is also partly for big fixing and support purposes.

When asked about whether market stalls would be tweaked in the further future, the developer basically said no: "I'll finesse the marketplace but I'm not going to change it. The system was designed so that the town evolves naturally from the center to its outskirts, I really wanted mechanics creating a natural town development with the outskirts being less developed and more rural."

Manor Lords publisher shouts out benefit of letting developers cook as its bug-themed RTS and Soviet city-builder launch to rave reviews after up to 8 years in early access.

Apple rejects PC emulators on the iOS App Store

Earlier this year, Apple started officially allowing "retro game emulators" on the iOS App Store without the need for cumbersome jailbreaking or sideloading. But if you want to emulate retro PC games on your iOS device, you are apparently still out of luck.

In a recent blog update, iDOS developer Chaoji Li said that the latest version of the DOSBox-based MS-DOS emulator was finally rejected from the iOS App Store this month after a lengthy, two-month review process:

They have decided that iDOS is not a retro game console, so the new rule is not applicable. They suggested I make changes and resubmit for review, but when I asked what changes I should make to be compliant, they had no idea, nor when I asked what a retro game console is. It's still the same old unreasonable answer along the line of "we know it when we see it."

The developer of iOS Virtual Machine app UTM told a similar tale of App Store rejection on social media. The reported two-month review process for the UTM app ended with "the App Store review board determin[ing] that 'PC is not a console' regardless of the fact that there are retro Windows/DOS games fo[r] the PC that UTM SE can be useful in running," the developer said.

Elden Ring Mod Removes The Need To Hunt Down Scadutree Fragments

Elden Ring's DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, quickly disregards your previous efforts in coming up with a character build by introducing a different leveling system. If hunting down Scadutree Fragments isn't your thing, however, there's a mod that gets rid of the feature altogether.

By now, you're probably aware that you need to amass dozens of Scadutree Fragments to withstand the dangers lurking around the Land of Shadow. But if you prefer the methods of old, user Sereenaty over at Nexus Mods has the answer. The No More Scadutree Grind mod removes the need to collect the fragments, as well as Revered Spirit Ashes, and instead makes it so damage dealt and taken are scaled in a similar way to the vanilla game.

Before you install the mod, there are a few notes worth keeping in mind. "The mod was only tested on a fresh character with zero Scadutree fragments collected," reads the description. "No idea how it affects saves that already collected some."Continue Reading at GameSpot

War Thunder Dev Apologizes After Accidentally Using Image Of Challenger Disaster

War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment has issued an apology after accidentally using a picture of the Space Shuttle Challenger exploding in the game's artwork.

With each new patch released for War Thunder, a new loading screen is added that reflects its contents, and these can also be downloaded as wallpapers from the developer's website. In this case, the most-recent screens include War Thunder's newest Seek & Destroy update, but appeared to also show an infamous image of the Challenger explosion. The issue was first noticed by users on Reddit as well as those on War Thunder's forums.

At first, some users speculated that it could've been an AI image, but Gaijin Entertainment addressed the issue, saying, "Hey guys, yeah please accept our apologies for this, the picture was part of an aerial explosion reference pack used by our artists and the context was lost." Gaijin also said the key art would be changed on Monday and it's taking steps to make sure that this issue doesn't happen again.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Decades later, John Romero looks back at the birth of the first-person shooter

Enlarge (credit: Aurich Lawson | Id | GDC)

John Romero remembers the moment he realized what the future of gaming would look like.

In late 1991, Romero and his colleagues at id Software had just released Catacomb 3-D, a crude-looking, EGA-colored first-person shooter that was nonetheless revolutionary compared to other first-person games of the time. "When we started making our 3D games, the only 3D games out there were nothing like ours," Romero told Ars in a recent interview. "They were lockstep, going through a maze, do a 90-degree turn, that kind of thing."

Despite Catacomb 3-D's technological advances in first-person perspective, though, Romero remembers the team at id followed its release by going to work on the next entry in the long-running Commander Keen series of 2D platform games. But as that process moved forward, Romero told Ars that something didn't feel right.

State of Decay 2 developer immortalizes a player's late dad as an in-game playable survivor: "My heart skipped a beat when I saw his name"

Rare wholesome news, folks. State of Decay 2 developer Undead Labs has memorialized a community member's late father as an in-game character.

Redditor EmbarrassedBudget shared the wholesome story earlier this week, explaining that he sent a message to Undead Labs three years ago, shortly after his dad's death. "They did what they could, which means just adding his name to random survivors," the player continued. "3 years later and I found him. Not just his name, but his traits, everything about him. This will always be my forever community."

The accompanying screenshot shows a playable character called Bruce Allen Buncombe who, according to his in-game traits, ran a medical office before the zombie apocalypse, led a quiet life, and is "old and tired" - all qualities that were supposedly shared with his real-world counterpart.
My dad passed away 3 years ago. Found him in the game. from r/StateOfDecay

In a follow-up comment, the player thanked the studio now "that my dad's immortal" - "We may get older and forget this game (highly doubt it), but no matter what, he'll always be a part of it."

"I'm not crying you're crying," the studio tweeted shortly after, "we're glad you found him."

The State of Decay series might have festered a large following for its fun base building, community management, and zombie brain-bashing, but they've always struck me as oddly sad games. Melancholy guitar strings play over strolls through abandoned towns. Sorrowful backstories get revealed in quite drive alongs. Permadeath hangs over your community brighter than the sun. In that sense, State of Decay is a series about persevering, holding onto hope, despite life's impermanence - and Undead Labs only reinforced that with the above story.

‘Wordle’ Answer Today 1101 June 24th 2024 – Hints and Solution (6/24/24)

Here is the Wordle answer today for the 1101 word, released on June 24th, 2024 and some hints to help you solve it.

Wordle is a very popular word game that has gone viral due to the results being posted all over social media by players and the simplicity of the game. The aim is to guess the five-letter American English word in six guesses or less.

There are no initial clues given as to what the word could be, but once you have made a guess, the tiles will change colour letting you know more about the letters in the word. The three different colours the tiles could change to are grey, yellow, or green.

Grey indicates that the letter you guessed is not in the word at all, so you should avoid using it in future guesses.

Yellow indicates that the letter does appear in the word, but not in the position you have it in now.

Green indicates that you have guessed the correct letter and placed it in the correct location, which is the colour you want to see!
Wordle Game – How to Play

There is also a hard mode for the game in which you are forced to use any correctly guessed letters from the previous row in every guess you make.

You may already do this, but there are times when there are multiple answers for the Wordle and you need to guess a word that contains the potential letters to help you solve the Wordle, which you will not be able to do with this mode.

You can always turn it back off during the game as well if you find it too difficult.

Future FromSoft games will build on Elden Ring's "combination between freedom and difficulty," director Hidetaka Miyazaki says

Developer FromSoftware isn't ready to talk about its next game, but whatever the project ends up being will snatch the baton from Elden Ring and continue "that combination between freedom and difficulty."

The studio's breakout successes - Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Bloodborne - attracted a devoted cult fanbase thanks to their imposing difficulty, community-building design, and effortlessly mysterious worlds. But Elden Ring flung the studio into the mainstream, having sold over 25 million copies since launch, arguably because its open world made the Soulslike formula more accessible. Rather than throwing your character into the same jaws of death over and over and over again, Elden Ring let players turn around, run away, seek out different challenges, and then return stronger.

"Traditionally, we've always liked the higher-difficulty curve type of games and experiences," director Hidetaka Miyazaki said in an interview with CNET. "But I think that nature in and of itself alienates a portion of the game-playing audience, whereas Elden Ring succeeded in casting a wider net but at the same time keeping that core high learning curve."

Miyazaki continued to say that "an open world game or experience" isn't necessarily the reason why, rather "the degree of freedom and the amount of freedom that we give players [is what] helps balance or offset that difficulty curve and makes the game more accessible and engaging for a certain player demographic."

As Shadow of the Erdtree brings Elden Ring to a close, "that combination between freedom and difficulty will become a big hint in whatever it is we do next," Miyazaki noted. Exactly what FromSoftware is making next remains a mystery. Miyazaki previously expressed desire to continue the mech-explodathon series Armored Core, but, somewhat surprisingly, his "ideal fantasy RPG" still remains a dream in his head.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree debuted to ‘Mixed’ Steam reviews as players complained about unfair difficulty and performance troubles.

Nintendo keeps team behind Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood a secret, but confirms "original developers" from the RPG's bankrupt studio are involved

Nintendo is once again staying tight-lipped about the studio behind one of its upcoming games - this time, the company declined to confirm who's making Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

The Mario & Luigi RPG spin-off series hasn't received a new game in nine whole years, partly because the series' original developers AlphaDream went bankrupt in 2019 after releasing seven turn-based games about our Italian brother's joint dream-incepting, time-travelling, Bowser-entering adventures. During June 2024's Nintendo Direct, the publisher announced that the duo would be making a comeback across "seafaring islands" in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, coming November 7, but stopped short of confirming who was behind the latest romp.

When asked about which studio is behind the game, Nintendo gave a now-familiar answer to Game File: "Some of the original developers who worked on the franchise are involved in the development of Mario & Luigi: Brothership. For more information about the developers, please stay tuned to the game credits at release."

Nintendo has been oddly secretive about the developers behind some of its third-party games, as it refused to credit the Super Mario RPG studio pre-release. This became a major talking point when Nintendo similarly wouldn't confirm Good Feel as the developers behind this year's Princess Peach: Showtime, despite the studio's stellar reputation.

Nintendo's secretive habit is definitely unusual in an industry that normally shares such information via a press release or a logo at the end of trailers. Maybe the company wants to retain a Disney-esque air of mystery around its releases as if these magical games grow on even more magical trees. But, hey, turning your developers into selling points isn't a bad thing - knowing Christopher Nolan directed Oppenheimer didn't hurt the box office, right?

For now, check out all the upcoming Nintendo Switch games you should keep an eye out.

What are Hidetaka Miyazaki's favorite FromSoftware games now that Elden Ring is finished? "Dark Souls and Bloodborne left a very big impression," the president says

FromSoftware head Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed Bloodborne and Dark Souls "left a big impression on him" when asked about his personal favorite game from the studio.

Speaking to CNET recently, Miyazaki was asked about his personal favorite game across FromSoftware's entire history. Yes, there are games that the Japanese studio made before Miyazaki joined, like the original King's Field games, but it seems the question was more geared to get Miyazaki to pick one of his own games, or looking at it another way, his favorite child.

"First Dark Souls and Bloodborne," Miyazaki begins. "Of course, I love them all. On a very personal level, I would say, first Dark Souls and Bloodborne left a very big impression on me. As a company, Elden Ring put us in a completely different league, so that was a huge milestone for the company," the Elden Ring director and FromSoftware studio head continues.

"And if we expand it to all the FromSoftware games, including children not my own, I would say King's Field 2," Miyazaki adds. This is one of the games that Miyazaki has continually talked about over the years as loving even before he joined FromSoftware, and the game went on to heavily influence Demon's Souls, the first game Miyazaki directed at FromSoftware.

That Bloodborne is among Miyazaki's personal favorite games will be a small comfort to its ravenous fans. For the first time in literal years, Miyazaki has recently been quizzed about Bloodborne a number of times, saying earlier this year in February that he's "very happy" so many people want a remake, and commenting again earlier this month that many FromSoftware devs want a Bloodborne PC port.

On a personal note, I'm a little surprised Miyazaki didn't choose an Armored Core game - he's on record as absolutely adoring the series, and being "extremely jealous" of those who got to work on Armored Core 6 at FromSoftware. When you've got riches to pick from like FromSoftware's history, you can't really go wrong.

Check out our guide on how to start the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in Elden Ring if you want to hit the ground running in the expansion.

How to beat the final boss in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree - Promised Consort Radahn guide

The Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree final boss is General Radahn, your old buddy from when you had migraines after spending hours in Caelid. Now, though, he's called Promised Consort Radahn, as he's revealed to be Miquella's most loyal companion. You'll battle him in a legacy dungeon called Enir-Ilim, which you'll gain access to upon burning the Sealing Tree.

There are some similarities between Mr. Starscourge and Mr. Promised Consort, most notably the use of massive dual greatswords and a penchant for dive-bombing you like a meteor. The key difference, now, is that the fight takes place in a smaller arena and not a desert island, so don't worry about Radahn galloping around on a tiny horse.Continue Reading at GameSpot

After 5 years in early access, Manor Lords publisher finally releases its Soviet city builder to 92% positive Steam user reviews

Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, a popular city-builder that's been simmering in early access for five years, has finally fully launched to universal praise.

Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic has been challenging players to turn "an impoverished country into a rich industrial superpower" for years now using "intricate production chains and a fully simulated global economy," according to the game's blurb. Developer 3Division and publisher Hooded Horde (of Manor Lords fame) seem to have packed the game with all the micro-managerial systems you could ask for - construction, transportation, trade, healthcare, education, entertainment, tourism, citizen loyalty, farming, and much more are all available to poke at as you steam toward a communist utopia.

Years spent in the early access trenches has left Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic with a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam, based on almost 15,000 user reviews, of which 92% of players left a thumbs up.

Plenty of reviews gush about the game's deep and deeply realistic city-building systems that make Cities: Skylines look like a simple walk in the park. "W&R really has blossomed into a gem, it is without a doubt THE most comprehensive city builder there is," userreviewer diamonman writes. "I used to pivot between games like Cities Skylines and Transport Fever... this game scratches both itches at once with so much extra depth." Another user review from goebbers shared that the game made them understand how their own Siberian hometown "was the way it was," which is pretty much the ultimate praise for a simulation game like this.

It's welcome news considering development hit a large snag in the road after a "once-respected" community member allegedly launched a flurry of DMCA claims against the city-builder, taking issue with an official in-game mode that used ideas also present in his own hot-to-play-realistically guide.

Workers & Resources' 1.0 update also brings new entertainment facilities such as an amphitheater and a large stadium, playgrounds, graphical improvements, and quality of life fixes. Today's new Biomes DLC also brings, well, three new biomes so you can spread communism to deserts, tundras, and the tropics.

Check out the 15 best city building games if you’re in a grand-overlord mood.

After George R.R. Martin's influence on Elden Ring, will FromSoftware work with another big writer? Hidetaka Miyazaki says "We would definitely be open to exploring that"

One of the many things that makes Elden Ring stand out among FromSoftware's other works is Game of Thrones scribe George R.R. Martin contributing to the lore and mythology. As it happens, it's gone so well that director Hidetaka Miyazaki "would definitely be open" to other collaborations on future FromSoftware games.

Speaking to GameSpot, Miyazaki reminisces about working with Martin before concluding that another collaboration is something he "would definitely be open to." Not just because it adds a lot to the game, but because it offers a valuable learning experience for developers, too.

"One of the huge value-adds of Elden Ring is, of course, George R. R. Martin's contribution in terms of the lore and the mythology, and it is one of the very unique points that other FromSoftware games don't have," he says. "When the team was able to start unpacking his lore and his mythology, it turned into a huge stimulation for us, and it was something that on the development side, we don't get to experience that often."

As such, Miyazaki says that if FromSoftware had the chance to work with another major creator, he would "definitely be open to exploring that." Working with Marin was a "unique" experience for both the developers working on Elden Ring and the players who got to experience the final product.

"And with regards to George R. R. Martin himself as a person, aside from the stimulation the team received from all of his amazing mythology and lore, George had a very good understanding of game design and video games in general," Miyazaki says. "I think he has a certain respect for it as well, so that made the collaboration and the entire process very, very seamless and easy for us."

Good vibes all around. There's more to come, too, as Elden Ring's one-and-likely-done DLC is here. You can check out our Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree review to see whether it holds up – spoiler, it does.

Here's how to start the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in Elden Ring.

Elden Ring's Hidetaka Miyazaki jokes he's not great at presidenting because "95% of what I do" is still "directing games"

FromSoftware president and frequent director Hidetaka Miyazaki has joked that he's not too great at the former job responsibility because "about 95%" of his time goes toward actually making the games.

Miyazaki is revered for directing the studio's bleak, often crushing, but ultimately hopeful games, and after the cult successes of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, he was also appointed to a presidential role within the Japanese game developer - which was previously best known for mech-explodathon series Armored Core and experimental offshoots like Enchanted Arms, the odd 2006 JRPG that me and seven other people love.

After the towering success of Elden Ring, however, FromSoftware is no longer a mid-sized developer of cult hits. The open-worlder has shifted over 25 million copies and its imposing difficulty plus accessible world design has enshrined it into the wider pop culture conversation. But, despite the studio exploding in popularity, Miyazaki remains just as committed to game development as ever.

"There is always going to be this enjoyment and satisfaction I get out of making games, regardless of what my title or position in the company is," Miyazaki says in an interview with the Guardian. "I enjoy helping grow and nurture the younger directors whom I see guiding the company in the next stage. But sitting in a management office all day isn't my style. I really get my hands dirty and continue to make games together, through which I hope I can communicate my process to a different generation of talent. I have had the title of president for almost 10 years now, but I would say about 95% of what I do at the company and how I spend my time is directed towards making games and directing games. Using that ratio, you could say I only actually have about six months experience as an executive!"

The Elden Ring director still hasn’t made his “ideal fantasy RPG” yet, so he’ll likely remain committed to game development for a while.

Avowed director pushes back on the Skyrim comparisons, says the RPG is "a lot closer" to Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds

When Avowed was first announced back in 2020, the internet latched on to one comparison that Obsidian's RPG hasn't been able to shake off since: a comparison to Skyrim. A first-person perspective, fantasy world, sword-and-magic dual-wielding - the surface-level similarities are certainly there, but Avowed's leads say the game has more in common with the studio's prior work.

Once again asked about the Skyrim comparisons, Avowed director Carrie Patel told Game Informer that "the best comparison is The Outer Worlds," Obsidian's satirical, anti-corpo space romp, because it "gives a much clearer idea of the scope of the game and also the design and layout." Rather than letting folks loose in an open world that you can walk across from one point to the other, Avowed follows its galactic sibling's footsteps with a "series of open zones that are connected and unlock over the course of the game... and yeah, in terms of the kind of the quest structure, the narrative structure, it's a lot closer to The Outer Worlds, as well," Patel adds.

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart previously pushed back on the comparisons last summer, when he revealed to PC Gamer that Avowed was initially pitched as the studio's take on Bethesda's giga-successful formula, but eventually reverted to what the team was good at. "I think over the course of time as we worked on it… Bethesda makes an awesome Skyrim. Mojang makes an awesome Minecraft, and Turn10 makes awesome racing games," Urquhart said, "What we do is we make our awesome RPGs, right?"

The Outer Worlds might have provided the framework for Avowed's structure, but the fantasy adventure definitely isn't gunning for the same biting humor. Patel explains that, tonally, Avowed takes the baton from its isometric predecessor, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, with a "very grounded and serious political story," plus a "very kind of weird and esoteric, metaphysical, and divine story beneath that... A lot of moments of seriousness, but also moments of levity to kind of to kind of break that up, and a lot of those things are very character-based. So yeah, I wouldn't compare it tonally to The Outer Worlds."

Avowed is due to launch on Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, and PC sometime later this year. If you don't think you have the time to smash through both Pillars of Eternities beforehand, no worries - Obsidian assured you don't need to play its older CRPGs to catch up. (You should, though, they're real good.)

Apple Intelligence and other features won’t launch in the EU this year

Three major features in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia will not be available to European users this fall, Apple says. They include iPhone screen mirroring on the Mac, SharePlay screen sharing, and the entire Apple Intelligence suite of generative AI features.

In a statement sent to Financial Times, The Verge, and others, Apple says this decision is related to the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Here's the full statement, which was attributed to Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz:

Two weeks ago, Apple unveiled hundreds of new features that we are excited to bring to our users around the world. We are highly motivated to make these technologies accessible to all users. However, due to the regulatory uncertainties brought about by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), we do not believe that we will be able to roll out three of these features — iPhone Mirroring, SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements, and Apple Intelligence — to our EU users this year.

Specifically, we are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security. We are committed to collaborating with the European Commission in an attempt to find a solution that would enable us to deliver these features to our EU customers without compromising their safety.

It is unclear from Apple's statement precisely which aspects of the DMA may have led to this decision. It could be that Apple is concerned that it would be required to give competitors like Microsoft or Google access to user data collected for Apple Intelligence features and beyond, but we're not sure.

Crunchyroll unveils its summer anime lineup, including the return of a video game adaptation

Crunchyroll has unveiled its summer anime lineup, with dozens of new shows and old favorites to look forward to over the next few months.

The anime streamer is brightening up what is, typically, a traditionally dry season for new releases. Among the highlights are Tower of God season 2 on July 7, plus the return of Nier: Automata Ver1.1A, the adaptation of the beloved 2017 PlatinumGames title, on July 5.

Monogotari’s Off & Monster season is streaming from July 6, while we have a keen interest in new series Wistoria: Wand and Sword, which sees protagonist Will Serfort aim to prove the sword is mightier than the wand in a world where magic reigns supreme.

The Crunchyroll summer 2024 lineup is as follows:

* Shy season 2 – July 1
* The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible – July 1
* TASUKETSU -Fate of the Majority- – July 2
* Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian – July 3
* Senpai is an Otokonoko – July 4
* Twilight Out of Focus – July 4
* Days with my Stepsister – July 4
* The Cafe Terrace and Its Goddesses season 2 – July 4

* Narenare -Cheer for You!- – July 7
* VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream – July 7
* A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring – July 7
* Mayonaka Punch – July 8
* No Longer Allowed in Another World – July 9
* Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World season 2 – July 10
* Love is Indivisible by Twins – July 10
* Bye Bye, Earth – July 12
* Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! – July 13
* ATRI -My Dear Moments- –July 13
* Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World? – July 13
* Sengoko Youko – July 17
* Delico’s Nursery – August 7

Several anime are also continuing on from the spring season. They are: Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction, One Piece’s Egghead arc, My Hero Academia season 7, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime season 3, Detective Conan’s Case Closed, Chibi Makuro-chan, Yatagarasu, and Wonderful Precure!

Though unconfirmed, the absence of Demon Slayer season 4 there would suggest the Hashira Training arc is coming to a close at the end of June, rather than stretching into July.

The full list of Crunchyroll’s summer 2024 anime schedule can also be found on the streamer’s official site.

Rebecca Ferguson teases that Silo season 2 is "dark," and "bonkers" – and shares how many seasons she's contracted for

Silo star Rebecca Ferguson has teased the upcoming second season of the Apple TV Plus show – and it sounds like we're in for a treat.

The series, based on Hugh Howey's trilogy of novels, revolves around a subterranean community. Nobody knows what's outside of this silo or why it was built. Ferguson plays Juliette, an engineer, and season 1 ended with Juliette leaving for the outside world after discovering all is not as it seems.

"Season 2 is dark. It's a bonkers exciting season," Ferguson told TheWrap. "It is huge, man." In the same interview, she also revealed that she's contracted for four seasons, and she knows the ultimate ending of the series. Still, though, Silo has only been officially renewed for season 2 for now.

"We're now looking at green-lighting seasons 3 and 4. And I think we would film them maybe together, and that would be the end," Ferguson shared earlier this year. She also teased the ending: "I believe that the show has an ending, and I know when that is. To be honest, I don't think it's a secret."

So far, Silo season 2 has an intriguing first look that shows Juliette in the outside world, suited up in an astronaut-style outfit.

"I've seen season two and it's one of the best things I've ever seen," Howey revealed on Threads – high praise coming from the creator, of course.

Silo season 2 doesn't yet have a release date. While you wait, check out our guide to all the best Apple TV Plus shows to stream now, and you can fill out your watchlist with our guide to the most exciting upcoming new TV shows.
